NVMC History - The Story

I am Jim Botts (James S. Botts, MD, FACP). I came to Hobbs, NM immediately after completing my residency training on July 1, 1971, to join Norte Vista Medical Center and start a practice in internal medicine. NVMC had been opened in 1967, by Rex Quigley, MD, David Dalise, DDS, and Horace Ross, DDS. They were soon joined by Steve E. Hood, MD who like Dr. Quigley, was a general practitioner. In early 1970 James Robert (Bob) Ray, MD, joined the group. Dr. Ray had been a flight surgeon for the US Navy and came to practice as a general practitioner. I decided to join the group in the fall of 1970. At the time of my arrival to practice in 1971, a general surgeon, Van H. Howard, MD had joined the group. In 1972, a second general surgeon, William C. Stone, MD, FACP moved his practice from downtown Hobbs, to NVMC.

Norte Vista Medical Center was physician owned until 1994 when it was bought in its entirety by St. Mary Hospital of Lubbock, Texas. A few years later St. Mary Hospital purchased Methodist Hospital also of Lubbock, Texas. The new organization was Covenant Health Systems which ultimately closed the clinic in 2003. From the clinic's inception in 1967 until it closed in 2003, many physicians came and left, and some stayed but did not become owners. In the end there were six owners who sold NVMC.

Dr. Stone stayed with the group until it was dissolved in 2003. During his time at NVMC, he was meticulous about saving articles from local publications, mainly the Hobbs News-Sun. After Dr. Stone's death in March of 2016, I was given his collection of clippings, and this is the source of this website.

The web site is composed of four pages. One is the Main Menu which you are looking at now. On this page there is a button for Physicians. Clicking of this button will display a page of buttons, some are for physicians affiliated with NVMC, as well as physicians not affiliated with NVMC. On the page you are now looking at there is a button for Non-Physicians . Clicking this button will take you to a page with buttons for employees of NVMC as well as others in the community who were of interest to NVMC. Each button for each person (Physicians and Non-Physicians) has a dropdown menu with links to articles in which the individual is mentioned. This format was selected because viewers are likely interested in people they know, and not everyone mentioned in the hundreds of clippings preserved by Dr. Stone. The chronology of the clippings is mentioned on each clipping, however, there is some guess work on my part as all clippings were not dated. There are also a number of photos taken at NVMC's Christmas Party and these may be viewed by clicking the Photos of Skits button.
